San Mateo, Calif., December 4, 2013 – Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: BIRT), The BIRT Company™ – and the leader in personalized analytics and insights, today named Elcom International and Phototype as winners of the 2013 Actuate Excellence Awards at the Actuate Customer Day in New York City, for their innovative implementations of BIRT to access real-time data and deliver personalized insights to end-users. These companies have demonstrated effective BIRT implementations to foster better decision making for customers, partners and employees.
Elcom International recognized as a winner for OEM Implementation of BIRT
Elcom enables interactive electronic commerce by developing and licensing proprietary software systems to its clients, primarily within the healthcare, government and education sectors. The company embeds Actuate software into its own PECOS offering to provide its clients with secure access to nearly one terabyte of easily configurable historical data, putting Elcom squarely in the Big Data management category.
PECOS is a procurement product that benefits Elcom clients by allowing them more visibility and transparency within audit trails of their own suppliers, including the ability to compare purchase costs within interactive reports. Before an order goes out to an Elcom client’s supplier, that supplier’s purchase data is recorded within PECOS, where all financial accounting codes are noted, budgets are checked, and approvals are finalized, eliminating the need for a manual reporting process. As a result, Elcom’s clients can analyze information on the fly, slice and dice data, and customize and formulate their own reports to gain valuable insights and control costs.

Phototype recognized as a winner in BIRT Implementation category
Phototype focuses on the pre-press, packaging and in-store brand graphics printing processes for major retail and wholesale consumer product goods (CPG) brands. The company regularly samples press runs from multiple print suppliers to detect sources of unfavorable visual variances, such as color. This information is delivered to Phototype’s Print Quality Management (PQM) system, a sophisticated, searchable database that integrates BIRT, which acts as the system’s “BizIQ,” providing comprehensive, real-time analytics to both the CPG companies and their print suppliers. Phototype started out using open source BIRT, but later transitioned to Actuate’s commercial BIRT product for its increased security.
CPG clients are able to view this data on custom dashboards from Phototype to gain critical performance insights that enable them to make immediate decisions about their print supply chain. In turn, CPG clients can better communicate with their print suppliers in order to produce visually consistent, high-quality goods graphics and packaging. Being a visually oriented company itself, Phototype also emphasizes the importance of data visualization by providing PQM as a central location for presenting graphically and aesthetically advanced BIRT dashboards within both ad-hoc and custom reports, in turn stimulating compelling insights for customers.
