So You Can See What You BuiltThe BIRT Runtime Engine is an API-instructed JavaEE engine that executes and renders report designs built within the BIRT Designer to produce HTML, PDF, or Microsoft Office outputs. Referred to as the BIRT Engine, this open source runtime library simply needs to be hosted within a larger application server such as Tomcat, JBoss or Weblogic in order to provide dev teams a means to generate BIRT Reports repeatably and reliably.
The BIRT Runtime Engine includes:
A sample viewer for rendering BIRT report content
An API-driven Java library that produces XML-based design files and templates through the Design Engine API, runs designs, queries and formats output and renders chart output
Extensibility through and beyond these interfaces such that it can support additional custom-built document emitters, data access extensions through the Open Data Access framework and extensions to charts or components defined in the BIRT Designer IDE.
Pressure to become evidence-based and predictive with healthcare services – leveraging historical data to create predictive models
The BIRT Runtime Engine requires the BIRT Designer from Eclipse to help define query definitions and graphically create BIRT content. The Engine is often embedded within larger web applications to provide printing and document generation services within Java applications. It is an ideal fit for ISVs and Java development projects that seek a simple, cost-effective reporting solution.
